about

Tony Foster is a Juno-nominated Seattle-based pianist and composer who was born in Vancouver Canada.

Project Paradiso is a concept created by Foster to explore the rich music of film and adapt it for a jazz context. With his first release for this new concept, Foster has arranged and adapted the music of two iconic film composers- Ennio Morricone and Henry Mancini.

In this cinematic piano trio performance, Foster’s gifted arranging is on display, and his choice of songs range from the very well-known (like "Love Theme from Cinema Paradiso" and "Theme From The Pink Panther") to the less-known but equally great melodies (like "Nothing to Lose" from "The Party" and "Theme From U Turn"). Track 8, which showcases Foster’s composing skills and is entitled “Mr. Mancini,” is obviously inspired by Henry Mancini.

It should be noted Foster shares an Italian heritage with Morricone and Mancini being that his great grandfather John Giovanni Pompilio came to the USA from Bari, Italy around 1800 and eventually settled in Calgary Alberta Canada where he is noted as a Calgary pioneer who led a band which marched in the Calgary Stampede in the 1930s.

This recording features Vancouver Canada drummer Joe Poole and Seattle’s Nate Parker on bass.

Foster has been featured on CBC Radio nationally in Canada, his last recording charted in the top 50 jazz radio charts, and he has toured and performed internationally everywhere from Bogota Colombia to Torino Italy. He also is a 2016 Canadian Juno award nominee for his work with drummer Dan Brubeck.

Key influences for Foster include Ahmad Jamal, Keith Jarrett, Monty Alexander, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, McCoy Tyner, Erik Satie, Stevie Wonder and many others.

Foster has performed with such notable jazz legends as Ernestine Anderson, Scott Hamilton, Russell Malone, Sheila Jordan, Jeff Hamilton, Peter Washington, Dee Daniels, Steve Davis and Eric Alexander.
